Lëkurësi Castle

Lëkurësi Castle is a historic castle located on top of a hill overlooking the city of Saranda in Albania. The castle was built in the 16th century by the Ottoman Empire and played an important role in defending the city from various invaders. The castle was abandoned in the 18th century and fell into disrepair.

Recently, the Albanian government invested in restoring Lëkurësi Castle for tourism. Visitors can now climb a winding staircase to the very top of the castle's tower, from where they can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Ionian Sea. The castle grounds also include a restaurant and bar.

Historic castle from the 16th century

Located in the heart of the picturesque and rocky Albanian mountains, Lëkurësi Castle is impressive for its majesty and rich history and legends. The fortification was commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century and was an integral part of the defense of the borders of the mighty Ottoman Empire against invaders.

Despite repeated destruction and occupation by various enemy armies (including the Wallachians and Greeks), the castle's fortifications have stood the test of time, witnessing a turbulent and rich history. During World War II, the castle served as a powerful base for German and Italian forces, adding legends and intrigue to the site's already rich history.

After years of abandonment and neglect, the Albanian government spared no expense to restore the castle and return it to its former glory. Today, visitors can experience the magic of its rich history through tours, panoramic views of the beautiful surrounding countryside and the original flavors of traditional Albanian cuisine at nearby restaurants.

Lëkurësi Castle is a true testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity, and its enduring beauty will convict anyone who visits this magnificent historic site.
