Ancient City

Butrint is a noteworthy historical city located on the southern coast of Albania, near the Ionian Sea. This city served as an important cultural and commercial center, as well as a strategic military position. Founded in ancient times, this city was inhabited by the Illyrians since at least the 8th century BC. It was then conquered by Rome, followed by the Byzantines, Normans and Venetians. In the 14th century the city became part of neighboring Epirus and then the Ottoman Empire. In the 20th century, after Albania gained independence, Butrint was recognized as another symbol of the country's ancient tradition and culture. Today, the city's structures are among the best preserved archaeological monuments in Albania and are important tourist attractions. In 2000, the city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It's encouraging to observe such historical richness, a testament to the perseverance and endurance of Albanian culture over the centuries.
